“Jerry Carter’s Humble Optimism.” Helsingin Sanomat. Päivi Tähkakallio. June 16, 1990.
“Carter works with contrasts in vivid colors and media. He plays imprecated surfaces of hand cut stone and glass mosaic tessera against modules of slick cast Nuutajärvi Glass in his simplified glass constructions.
The properties and behavior of light have always been important for Carter – and up to this point mosaic works have provided a tool for an examination of light. Light in his glass constructions plays a significant part…. Properties of Mosaic work enable dynamic light reflection variations, while transparent glass sculptures rely on controlled and artificial lighting.
Cobalt blue and white Light Columns work are fabulous and modern works that let one anticipate the long-term effects of Nuutajärvi to the artist’s works. -Helsingin Sanomat. August 16, 1990
Carter is definitely a responsible artist who for years, even before widespread discussion about environmental problems, contemplates the future and possibilities of the Earth.
Carter’s works go beyond human survival; they remind us that Earth is just a small part of a larger system in decline. Carter’s optimistic hope is human effort to turn around climate decline may not be a losing battle. -By Päivi Tahkokallio. Helsingin Sanomat. August 16, 1990
